REMEMBERING A FRIEND AND MENTOR,
AMERICAN WATERCOLORIST, MILFORD ZORNES

By Pat Michaels

Meeting is at 6:30 with cookies and coffee served at 6:00.

At this month's meeting, Village Art Club member Pat Michaels will be sharing with us her knowledge and memories of her longtime friend and mentor, Noted American artist, Milford Zornes.  Milford was an early active member of the California Plein Air Painters (which eventually became the National Watercolor Society) in the early 1930s.  Today, Zornes' work hangs in the Metropolitan Museum, Butler Institute of American Art, Los Angeles County Museum of art, among others.

America lost a great artist and teacher this year when Milford passed away this March.  He was 100 years old.

Pat will be sharing her personal memories of working with and learning from this fine American artist as well as sharing some of his paintings with us on Tuesday.

To learn more about American Artist, Milford Zornes, visit http://articles.latimes.com/2008/mar/01/local/me-zornes1

JULY'S DIGITAL SPOTLIGHT shows on
PAINT ARTISTS ERIKA NELSON AND SUSAN EDGMON

Erika Nelson

Erika has been an active member of the Village Art Club, volunteering the last two years as the Nominating Committee chairman.  When she's not lending her talents as a volunteer, Erika is using her talents to create a wonderful body of artwork.  She is multi talented, equally skilled in the use of oil paints, watercolor,  and pastel, plus charcoal and pencil.  sculpture and various other mediums.  She has successfully exhibited her works in numerous galleries and studios throughout the west
and is looking forward to doing the same here in beautiful Ozark country.  Bella Vista is pleased to welcome this very talented artist to our community and I am pleased to welcome a wonderful new friend!

Erika is a wonderful portrait artist, painting individuals, groups and even pets!  You won't find a finer gift for a loved one then an original portrait by Erika, so keep her in mind when looking for that perfect gift for someone special in your life or a gift just for yourself!  She also often has other paintings available for sale, and is a resident artist at Wishing Spring Gallery.  She also has a website you can visit at www.artbyerika.com.

My Biography
Susan Edgmon

My interest in painting started in 1996, when I took a watercolor class at Art Center of the Ozarks.  By the second painting, I knew art was going to be my destiny.  I consider my style to be "realistic with a flair" using primarily watercolors and pastels as my medium.  In addition, I also paint dramatic flowers on canvas using acrylic and oil in a larger-than-life scale (up to 48" X 76").  My subjects include all things in nature such as flowers, animals, landscapes and people.

Painting has brought an acute awareness of the joy and wonderful beauty that is all around us everyday, no matter the weather or the season.  You don't need a large landscape to appreciate the beauty in the world; you can find it in an area as small as a single flower.  If after viewing my art, I get one person to take a moment to look at their surroundings a little closer than they would have otherwise, then I feel that I have been successful in achieving my artistic goals.

In June of 1998, I had a solo art show at Sager Creek Art Center in Siloam Springs, AR.  The title of the show was "The Development of a New Artist."  In 1999, I had a solo exhibit and in 2002, I exhibited with another artist in a two-person show.  In September 2004, I participated with two other artists in a show.  Every year I have an art exhibit with my students.  We had 32 students in the 2008 show.  The Searcy Art Council Gallery sponsored a solo exhibit of 45 of my paintings in July and August of 2005.  I have been one of eight artists from across the state to be invited to show my artwork in the Arkansas State Flower and Garden show in Little Rock the last 3 years.  In 2006, eight students and I toured and painted in France. We had an exhibit of our paintings while there.  A group of 12 are going to Italy in September 2008. An art exhibit that I called "Flower Power, etc." was held at the Art Center of the Ozarks in Springdale from June 6, to July 6, 2008

My originals and prints are included in private collections in many states, as well as 7 foreign countries (Australia, Canada, England, Israel, Italy, Scotland and Switzerland.)  My art has been published by two gift companies and distributed nationwide as part of their product line.  In addition, a book company has published four inspirational books using my paintings as the cover & text art.  I have won over 50 awards in local, regional & national competitive art exhibitions.

I have painted over 600 paintings since 1996.  I teach painting classes in Gravette and Bella Vista, AR.  Art has truly become a family affair.  Bill, my husband, does custom framing (Edgmon Framing).  It sure is nice to have that available to me.  In addition, he cooks!  My son, John, his wife, Karen and our granddaughter, Haley (who at 4 years calls herself an artist) and our grandson, Jacob lives in Bella Vista, AR.

I am a signature member of Artists of Northwest Arkansas and the Ozark Pastel Society.  My paintings can be viewed and purchased on www.susanedgmon.com.  I have (Signed and numbered) Giclee' prints available on several of my paintings.  You can contact me to see these plus additional paintings at my home & studio in Gravette.

HAVE A DIGITAL CAMERA?
WOULD YOU LIKE TO BE IN THE DIGITAL SPOTLIGHT?

USE YOUR CAMERA TO PROMOTE YOUR TALENTS!

If you are a club member you and your art could be featured in an upcoming issue of Artyfacts and archived on the website!  It's easy, and it's free!  Simply email an image of yourself and some of your works, along with a biography to dustie@dustie.com

Potters, Crafters, Jewelry Makers, Painters...everyone who is artistic and want to sell their creations have to "blow their own horns"!  Taking advantage of this website and being in the Digital Spotlight is a great way to do just that!

DON'T HAVE A DIGITAL CAMERA?

Then do the same, only with regular snap shots and regular mail mailed to me at 26 Tibberton Cr Dr, Bella Vista, Ar 72714.  This will take longer, but the "old fashioned" ways work just fine, even in these days of high tech.

We all know that artists have to promote themselves, and the Artyfacts is dedicated to promoting village art club members, toot your own horn this way and we'll redirect it to the rest of the membership!

ALWAYS TO REMEMBER TO CHECK WHAT'S
HAPPENING AT CRYSTAL BRIDGES

www.crystalbridges.com

AND CRYSTAL BRIDGES AT THE MASSEY!

http://massey.crystalbridges.org/

It's not every day, year, or even even at all, that a museum of the caliber of Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art is built in your own backyard so you might want to keep abreast of their progress!

In the meantime, Crystal Bridges at the Massey (on the Bentonville Square where the old library used to be) is hosting visiting artists, exhibits, free classes and more!  A few of our members recently participated in a couple of the classes held by visiting wildlife artist, Susan Morrison from Eureka Springs,  and had nothing but good to say about their experiences!

If you or any art club member that you know has recently won an award or should otherwise be recognized for their achievements, artistic or otherwise, please email dustie@dustie.com  !  Don't be afraid of blowing your own horn!  We all know that, as artists  and crafters we have to be proud of our accomplishments and share that pride if we expect to achieve the recognition we need for success!  So let us all know about it so that we can, as a club, show our pride in those accomplishments too!
